Mashpee/Genting Casino prospects

Mashpee Casino prospects

There are no current plans for the Legislature to take up a gaming compact between the Mashpee Wampanoag and the state, as the Gaming Commission gets ready to decide whether the tribe should retain exclusivity in the southeastern region.

The compact (H 3375) and accompanying resolve (H 3376) have been referred to the Joint Committee on Economic Development. The committee has not scheduled a hearing on it yet, according to an aide. Meanwhile, the Gaming Commission voted Thursday to add two more weeks of public comment before deciding whether to open the commercial bidding process in the region.

Public comment is due April 16 with a vote on whether to begin the commercial process on April 18.

In addition to the prospects of the Mashpee securing an approved compact, the commission could consider the tribe's prospects for receiving a land-in-trust agreement for a reservation. The Department of the Interior rejected a previous compact. Governor Patrick favors giving the tribe more time.

Refusing to learn from the experience of others, "Cha Ching" Murray lays the groundwork that will define the state's Addiction to the overstated Gambling Revenues......

[Senate President Therese Murray] said, “Then you add the gaming money that’s been isolated for transportation once the casinos are open. So the money will be there, we’re going to invest in the expansions, just as the governor wants, but a 10-year plan isn’t right in front of us. We’re going to do a five-year plan.”
