Casinos betting on VIPs [Gambling Addicts]

Biz Buzz: Casinos betting on VIP guests

Apr. 13, 2013

Look closely at visitor and revenue figures for Indiana’s casinos, and you’ll find something of a mystery.

For many casinos, attendance is way down, in large part because of competition from competing casinos in other states.

The amount of money those casinos take in, however, hasn’t fallen nearly as much.

Take, for example, the state’s biggest gambling hall: Horseshoe Casino in Hammond.

In March, attendance was down 16 percent year over year, but revenue was up 4 percent.

What gives?

Casino managers at Horseshoe and elsewhere say that as the market for gambling became more saturated, they have had to adjust their marketing efforts. Now, instead of trying to reach new players, they are focusing on existing gamblers who have a proven track record of spending big money.

“Over the last several months, we’ve reinvigorated our marketing toward VIP guests,” said Daniel Nita, general manager at Horseshoe Hammond. “I might lose five smaller once-a-year guests, but that can be offset by one trip by a VIP.” They're called GAMBLING ADDICTS!
