Boston Residents Split On Suffolk Downs Casino, Poll Finds

Boston Residents Split On Suffolk Downs Casino, Poll Finds

BOSTON — Boston residents are divided on bringing a casino to Suffolk Downs, according to a new poll from The Boston Globe.

Forty-four percent of residents are in favor of the Suffolk Downs casino proposal, with 37 percent opposed, the poll found.

No casino can win a state license without first gaining support of the residents of the host community.

In large cities, officials can hold a citywide election or restrict the vote to the neighborhood where the casino would be located. The Globe says a citywide vote would make for a tough campaign for Suffolk Downs. Sixty-six percent of respondents said they felt there should be a citywide vote.
Suffolk Downs’ $1 billion proposal in conjunction with Caesars Entertainment is competing against a Foxwoods Resort Casino proposal in Milford, and a Wynn Resorts Holdings proposal in Everett, for the sole eastern Massachusetts casino license.

Aside from trying to win over residents, Suffolk Downs is faced with another challenge: Mayor Thomas Menino’s decision not to run for reelection. The mayor has been a longtime supporter of the proposed casino, which would straddle East Boston and Revere.

Seth Daniel, a senior reporter for Independent Newspaper Group, which includes the Revere Journal and East Boston Times, joined WBUR’s Morning Edition (the audio player above) to talk about the possible ramifications of Menino’s departure on the proposal.
