DOWNPOUR FLOODS GREAT HALL, STATE HOUSE CORRIDORS

By STATE HOUSE NEWS SERVICE

STATE HOUSE, BOSTON, AUG. 5, 2010….Heavy rains Thursday afternoon sent water pouring into the Great Hall of the State House, soaking the floor and pouring water out of the hall and down staircases between the second and first floor of the capitol.

Building and grounds crews arriving on the scene were assessing the situation around 5 p.m.

The hall, which is covered by skylights, is undergoing renovations and crews throughout this year have been working on repairs to the State House roof.

Water spilled out of the hall toward offices on its eastern and western flanks, under wooden barricades blocking access to the hall during a renovation project, and into elevators that building security said they were shutting down.

The State House in recent years has repeatedly suffered water damage, includes rains that have damaged historic murals in the House chamber and temporarily closed down offices.

On Monday, July 12, another downpour sent rain gushing into a different area of the State House.

The breach hit a largely empty capitol, most lawmakers having departed after Saturday's tense close of formal sessions and many other workers also absent on the summer Thursday afternoon.

We've had the pestilence.

Now the floods.

Next the plagues?
