One of the Senate’s sharpest critics of expanded gambling, Sen. Susan C. Tucker, D-Arlington, hit on the lowered capital investment, saying people are expecting more luxury and resort designs than may materialize at casinos here.
“People have a vision of a resort with hotels and golf courses, but $600 million will get you slots in a box,” she said, noting that it cost many times that — $2.3 billion — to build the Mohegan Sun casino. “I think Twin River cost around $600 million and I think anybody who visits that would say, I don’t want that in my state. It’s a basic slot parlor,” Ms. Tucker said of the recently financially-troubled racino in Rhode Island.
“I think people will be surprised at the lack of quality and by that time the state is down the road and you can’t unplug them,” Ms. Tucker said. “If we expected a really fine resort then the minimum buy-in would have to be tripled. So I suspect the low numbers are simply paving the way for slot parlors, which will be a very big disappointment,” she said.
