NIMBY!

This gentleman got it right! No one wants a Slot Parlor in their backyard! Most folks recognize the community degradation that goes along with this predatory business.

Casino will steal Fall River's character, too

Now don't get me wrong; I like to play the slots and blackjack once in a while like a lot of other people I know. I don't mind a casino or two. Just not here.

If Fall River wants it (a casino), let them have it, lock, stock and barrel. Let them deal with the headaches and perils that will surely come along. Once there, Fall River's face will change. "Big Mamie" — what's that? A new slot machine? Maybe they can take some odds on Lizzie Borden's guilt — up or down.

The point is, Fall River will slowly but inevitability lose its character, its flavor, its uniqueness that makes Fall River what it is. That all will be gone, or at least most of it, once the casino is up and running.

If I want to partake of games of chance, OK, I'll go to Fall River. At least the state gets a piece of the action. Then I'll get in my car and drive 15 miles to home — home to New Bedford, where life without a local casino still has flavor, has character, the arts, museums, parks and the uniqueness of New Bedford. That's something I hope could never be taken away by anyone, least of all some casino developer sucking the life out of a resurgent New Bedford.

At least a whale will still be a whale in New Bedford; a whale in Fall River will be a "high roller."

Just remember, sometimes you get what you wish for, only to regret it later. They can have it and all its woes to follow five or six years from now. Maybe they can even paint the Braga Bridge once and for all. But I won't be crossing it too much any more on my way to Foxwoods; after all, Fall River's not far, and I can still drive home.

Good luck, Fall River — you'll need it!
