Gambling addict stole bank account details

Written byRICH GUTTRIDGE

A GAMBLING addict stole the bank account details of his partner’s friend in order to feed his habit, a court has heard.

Jamie Goode, 20, of Wyggeston Street, Horninglow, placed bets on an internet gambling website after he obtained details to the account of Jade Cartwright.

Burton Magistrates’ Court heard how Goode had gained access to the account while pretending to help Ms Cartwright with internet banking.

While visiting Goode’s girlfriend Ms Cartwright had requested to use her laptop to access her bank account online.

Goode, who was described as having a ‘serious’ gambling addiction, then ‘helped’ her log into her account, making a note of the account details and password.

He then placed a series of bets on April 20, including £50 and £20 stakes with Coral, draining money from Ms Cartwright’s account.

Dave Bell, prosecuting, told the court: “The injured party is a friend predominantly of the partner and while visiting used Mr Goode’s partner’s laptop to access her bank account.

“Mr Goode was assisting her, putting in passwords etcetera and after she completed the business that was the end of the transaction as far as she was aware.

“But she was later made aware of transactions made out to Coral bookmakers and he accepted he had used his friend’s details to obtain cash to spend on betting.”

Five bets were placed with the bookmakers using the account before suspicions arose.

Adrian Pearce, defending, insisted Goode was remorseful for what he did and that his actions had been driven by a need to feed a serious addiction.

He also said Goode had recently begun a new job and had taken steps to turn his life around.

Mr Pearce said: “My client has a serious gambling addiction and is deeply ashamed and embarrassed to have used a friend’s details in such a manner.”

Goode pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation at the Horninglow Street court.

He is due to return to the court at a later date for sentencing.
