Mohegan Sun adds Boston retail developer as partner in Palmer proposal
By Mark Arsenault, Globe Staff
Mohegan Sun today announced a partnership with Finard Properties, a Boston-based commercial real estate investment and development company, to build a 300,000-square-foot retail development as part of Mohegan’s proposed casino resort in Palmer.
“There isn’t a better, more experienced and more successful retail developer than Finard Properties, and we are thrilled to be adding them to the Mohegan Sun Massachusetts team,” said Mitchell Etess, chief executive of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, in a statement. “The portfolio of hugely successful Finard Properties’ developments is spread literally throughout every corner of New England and beyond. Their creativity and expertise will be a huge asset to our application for the Western Massachusetts gaming license.”
Mohegan Sun is in a three-way competition for the sole Western Massachusetts license. The other competitors are MGM Resorts International, which is planning a gambling resort in downtown Springfield, and Hard Rock International, which has proposed a casino on the Big E fairgrounds in West Springfield.
The state gambling commission is expected to choose the winner and award a license in early 2014.

Finard tapped for retail development at Mohegan Sun's casino project in Palmer
By Lori Stabile, The Republican
Mohegan Sun today announced a partnership with Boston-based Finard Properties, a commercial real estate investment company, for retail development at its proposed resort casino off Route 32 in Palmer.
“There isn’t a better, more experienced and more successful retail developer than Finard Properties, and we are thrilled to be adding them to the Mohegan Sun Massachusetts team,” Mitchell Etess, chief executive officer of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, said in a media release. “The portfolio of hugely successful Finard Properties’ developments is spread literally throughout every corner of New England and beyond. Their creativity and expertise will be a huge asset to our application for the Western Massachusetts gaming license.”
Finard Properties was founded in the 1950s and is known as an early pioneer of the modern shopping center. Its portfolio includes the Natick Shopping Center and University Mall in South Burlington, Vt.
“We are proud to ally ourselves with Mohegan Sun Massachusetts . . . Finard Properties is eager to complement this economic development project by creating a dynamic and thriving first-class retail component comprised of restaurants, entertainment, and international fashion brands," Todd Finard, chief executive officer of Finard Properties, said in the release.
Finard Properties has developed and managed retail properties ranging from urban retail projects to lifestyle centers and large-scale enclosed regional shopping malls. Mohegan Sun Massachusetts will include a 300,000-square-foot Finard Properties retail development, in addition to casino gaming, a hotel, premier dining and other amenities.
The deal with Finard Properties follows Mohegan Sun’s strategic partnership with Brigade Capital Management. “Our marketing advantage is one of the key strengths of our license application, and the additional creativity and excitement that Finard Properties brings to the Mohegan Sun Massachusetts team stands to enhance that even further," Etess said.
The Mohegan Sun project in Palmer is among three resort casino proposals under consideration by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission for Western Massachusetts for the one resort casino license set aside for that region.

Mohegan Sun Palmer Shopping Area Plans Dwarf CT Casino Retail Space
Mohegan Sun’s plans for a $775 million resort casino in Palmer, Mass. include shopping, dining and entertainment space that would be more than twice the size of its Connecticut venue, the casino operator said today.
The plans include 300,000 square feet of retail space compared with 130,000 square feet at The Shops at Mohegan Sun, according to spokeswoman Cathy Soper.
Mohegan also said today it will partner with Boston-based Finard Properties to develop the retail portion of the resort casino. Mohegan said it hopes the partnership will bolster its efforts to obtain a casino license for western Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is expected to issue one license for the region, and there are competing proposals for Springfield and West Springfield.
Finard, a commercial real estate firm, specializes in retail development.
“The portfolio of hugely success of hugely successful Finard Properties’ development is spread literally throughout every corner of New England and beyond,” said Mitchell Etess, chief executive of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority. “Their creativity and expertise will be a huge asset to our application for the western Massachusetts gaming license.”
A spokeswoman said design of the shopping area and securing of tenants won’t begin unless Mohegan secures the license.
The retail plans for the resort are separate from ones announced earlier this month by Northeast Realty Associates for land adjoining the 152-acre casino site. Those plans include retail space, a hotel, a lifestyle center and office space, according to a report in The Day of New London.
