Key Witnesses In The First Gambling Corruption Trial Not Even Called For The Retrial
Not calling the two legislators may be an attempt to avoid the controversy of the first trial.

Two legislators who were star witnesses in the original gambling corruption trial will not even take the stand in the upcoming retrial. In pre-trial talks, Federal prosecutors say they will not put Sen. Scott Beason, R-Gardendale, and former Rep. Ben Lewis, R-Dothan, on the witness stand. Instead, they will play recordings they made. The two were key to the initial investigation wearing wires for the government, and key to the first trial. One lawyer says not calling them is most likely an attempt to focus on their good testimony and avoid questions of ulterior motives and racially charged speech from the first trial.
