Judge Makes Recommendation in Alabama Bingo Corruption Case
by Mario Hendricks
MONTGOMERY, AL – A federal magistrate judge is recommending that the judge presiding in Alabama’s gambling corruption case reject the defendants’ requests to dismiss several charges.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Wallace Capel Jr. recommended Monday that U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson turn down requests to toss out the conspiracy and bribery charges against the 10 defendants.
The defendants had argued that political contributions did not encompass bribery. They also claim that the language in the indictment did not match the federal statute used to bring the charges.
A final decision on the charges is up to Thompson, who will reside at the trial scheduled to start June 6 in Montgomery.
