Citizens group launches opposition to Oxford casino

A local group has organized to oppose the $165 million four-season casino proposed for Oxford Hills.

The group, cleverly dubbed OHNO1 — Oxford Hills No on 1, get it? — announced its formation today in a press release.

OHNO1 describes itself as a group representing local citizens who “don’t want a casino in their backyard.”

“There’s much more to the casino issue than the proponents are telling,” said Zizi Vlaun, a businesswoman in Norway and one of the organizers of the local group, in the release. “This has the potential to change our quality of life in the Oxford Hills, and once its here, it’s here for good. We simply believe there are better ways to bring sustainable economic development to the area than relying on a casino which will only take money out of the local economy.”

The release also quotes Dennis Bailey, who represents CasinosNo!.

OHNO1 is now the third group to oppose the Oxford casino. The other, Citizens Against the Oxford Casino, is funded by Penn National Gaming and Hollywood Slots, which has a slot casino in Bangor.

Casino debate heats up in Maine

Portland, MAINE (NEWS CENTER) - There are now two groups coming out in opposition to the proposal to build a casino resort in Oxford.

CasinosNo, which has opposed casino efforts in the past and a new group called Citizens Against the Oxford Casino. Its list of members includes organizations that have a vested interest in the expansion of gambling here. The Maine Harness Horsemen's Association, the Passamaquoddy Tribe and Hollywood Slots in Bangor.

The opposition group says the Oxford proposal creates an unfair playing field by not allowing any other gaming facilities within 100-miles and it allows Oxford to have table games, while Maine's other facility is allowed only slots

"It's still a bad deal for Maine. We really need that level playing field. We really need to ensure that the market decides how many of these facilities that Maine can handle" said Dan Cashman, spokesperson for the group.

Officials with Black Bear Entertainment, the group that wants to build the Oxford casino say the proposal won't do anything to prevent those other groups from getting their piece of the gambling pie.

"Its kind of confusing to us. We don't understand why because they've stated numerous times that this operation should not affect them", said Jim Boldebook, an investor with Black Bear Entertainment.

Boldebook says the 100-mile limit is already state law and he says if Hollywood Slots wants table games they can do what his group did. Collect the signatures and send the issue out to voters.
