Macau: Triads 'under control'

Triads “under control”: Secretary for Security

Posted: 8/10/2012

The Secretary for Security, Cheong Kuoc Va, said yesterday that triad criminal activity in Macau is “under control”.

Mr Cheong stressed the police were keeping an eye on triads, with “big scale operations” taking place recently.

Mr Cheong’s comments came after a series of violent events over the past two months has people worried about security in the gaming industry.

Last month, the director of the Judiciary Police, Wong Sio Chak, admitted the force lacks teeth to fight crime inside the casinos.

According to official statistics for the first half of the year unveiled yesterday by Mr Cheong, total crime cases handled by the police recorded a 5 percent year-on-year increase, to 6,222 cases.

Violent crimes were up by 16.8 percent year-on-year, to a total of 347 cases.
