The Catholic church has suffered another blow as they are rocked with the conviction of a former CFO over embezzling funds.
The former Chief Financial Officer of the Philadelphia archdiocese is going to prison for two to seven years. The CFO was convicted of embezzling $900,000 this morning.
Anita Guzzardi had worked for the Roman Catholic archdiocese since she was 20 and was making over $120,000 a year as the chief financial officer when she was fired last year.
According to her lawyer she succumbed to bad shopping habits and gambling addictions after she felt betrayed by the church over the sex abuse scandal.
According to prosecutors she took relatives on trips to Hawaii, Caribbean and San Francisco. They also say she put some money to pay down a mortgage on a $425,000 house in Haddon Heights, NJ.
Guzzardi has repaid $260,000 and has been ordered to pay the remaining restitution.
