Taunton: Casino proposal brings worries of traffic congestion

The state recently signed a compact with the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe to build a casino, three hotels, restaurants, and a small water park in a Taunton industrial park, which is adjacent to two already congested state roads–Route 24 and Route 104.
The casino proposal has yet to get the final ‘okay’ but the Old Colony Planning Council is currently looking into the GATRA bus line.,which serves the Attleboro-Taunton area as well as most of Plymouth County, and the BAT bus line which serves the Brockton Area.
“The idea would be to incorporate both Regional Transit Authorities because the draw to the facility wouldn’t just be in Taunton but well beyond that,” explains Transportation Planner Jed Cornock.
He says the two bus line routes could be expanded or combined depending on the casino proposal,
“Well the issue right now is trying to figure out the timelines and how that all affects the city of Taunton and our region.”
Cornock anticipates Route 495 to cause problems along with Route 104, saying it’s a crowded area that can be dangerous at night. Old Colony will be investigating a 1998 interstate conversion study before making a decision whether or not to add the state roads on their future construction project list.
The Taunton casino project is undergoing environmental reviews with a land-trust pending with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
