Gambling addict stole groceries
A GAMBLER who stole groceries from the same supermarket on two occasions had his case adjourned at Swords District Court for a Probation Report.
Eoin Galligan, Castle Kevin Road, Kilmorewest, Dublin 5 pleaded guilty to the theft of €46.37 worth of groceries from Eurospar, The Green in Malahide. He further pleaded guilty to the theft of €80 worth of groceries from the same supermarket on October 6th, 2011. Garda Michael Mccabe told the court that Galligan had taken the groceries and left the supermarket without paying on both occasions.
The goods from the first theft were recovered but the goods from the second theft were not. Galligan, who has 82 previous convictions, brought €80 in compensation for the supermarket into court. Gda Mccabe agreed with Galligan's solicitor Mr Patrick Jackson that Galligan was co-operative and admitted he was a gambling addict. Galligan told the court he realises now he has a severe addiction to gambling and has started to face up to it by attending Gamblers Anonymous and counselling to which Judge Brian Sheridan remarked: 'After 82 previous convictions you didn't realise you had a problem?' 'I realise the damage I am doing,' said Galligan, 'I know I have an appalling record over the years and I apologise.' Mr Jackson told the court Galligan left school early and started to bet on horses over the years. 'He was also let go from a number of jobs because of his addiction,' explained Mr Jackson. Judge Sheridan said 'it comes to a point where I heard it all before' but decided to adjourn the case until March 5th for a Probation Report.
