Son Allegedly Kills Parents To Pay Gambling Debts

In a horrific story involving gambling addiction and murder, a Tel Aviv man has been arrested by Israeli police a month after his parents were found brutally murdered in their Jerusalem apartment.
At around 8pm, Saturday, August 14th, Noah Maoz, 64, and his wife Nurit, 60, had returned home after visiting neighbors the Neeman’s house, when three hours later one neighbour said he was awoken by a woman screaming, with the Neemans also confirming they heard the noises.
The following morning, the Maoz’s bodies were found by one of the couples’ three sons, Nir, who went to check on his parents who had failed to turn up to their work that day.
Now, one month later, his 28-year-old twin brother Daniel Maoz has been arrested suspected of having murdered his parents in an attempt to collect an inheritance in order to clear his heavy gambling debts.
Daniel Maoz is known to have had a gambling problem and was helped out and financially supported by his parents and siblings in the past.
Two years ago, Daniel apparently swore never to return to gambling again, but he is now believed to owe hundreds of thousands of shekels in gambling debts, which may possibly have been the cause of the apparent argument he had with his father that fateful night.
At first Daniel told police he was in Tel Aviv that night, but with increasingly mounting evidence changed his story to having had dinner at his parents’ home, and returning from their restroom to see a a man had murdered his parents.
He said he subsequently fought with the man, who managed to escape, before then going off to play poker with friends until 1 am, and returning to his parents apartment later to clear his tracks lest he became a suspect in the double murder.
Daniel’s friends later confirmed that he was acting very suspiciously that night, had asked several questions about the police’s ability to track cellphones, and had a knife wound on his hand and blood on his shirt.
Defending his client in court, lawyer Ariel Atari, said Daniel Maoz was innocent and that; “A man who sees his two parents on the floor, murdered, doesn’t always behave in the most rational way.”
