Former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich wasn't removed as Governor until Congress threatened to withhold $$$ .
Of the gambling/corruption connection --
In one [wire tapped] call, then governor Blagojevich and Monk are overheard talking about a bill that would redirect casino revenue to the horse-racing industry, prosecutors said. Blagojevich praised the lobbyist for telling a track operator he had to make a campaign contribution before the legislation would be signed.
“Good job,” Blagojevich is heard to say.
Of Illinois' corrupt history --
Blagojevich is the fourth of the past eight Illinois governors to face criminal charges. His predecessor, George Ryan, was convicted in 2006 of trading political favors for trips and cash. He is serving a 6 1/2-year sentence at a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Otto Kerner, who held the office from 1961 to 1968, was convicted on corruption charges after being appointed a federal judge. Dan Walker, who held the job from 1973 to 1977, was found guilty of crimes committed after he left office in 1987.
Of Blag's dismay at getting caught --
He also continues to accuse prosecutors of persecuting him for routine political deals.
