A Titusville woman was sentenced this morning in U.S. District Court to serve one month in prison followed by seven months house arrest and four years probation for embezzling more than $40,000 from the PNC Bank where she worked.
Patricia O. Eakin pleaded guilty in December to one felony count of embezzlement by a bank employee, according to court records.
Eakin apologized to the bank and the victims in the hearing before U.S. District Judge Sean J. McLaughlin. She said a longtime gambling addiction caused her to commit the thefts. She said the problem escalated after the Presque Isle Downs & Casino opened in Erie. PROXIMITY!
"I am not blaming the casino," she said.
As a part of her sentence, she must pay the money back.
The U.S. Attorney's Office said the thefts occurred between May 2010 and April 2011. Eakin took $40,925 from the bank, located at 123 Diamond St., the government charged.
Testimony this morning did not indicate what position Eakin held at the bank.
